![]() Supergiant deftly weaves player choice into every element of Pyre, from the moment-to-moment gameplay through the multiple endings. After each handful of matches are the Liberation Rites, where the two triumvirates most successful in the last set of Rites face off and the winner gets to choose a teammate to free from exile. Along the way between Rites, you practice, strategize with your growing team and get to know the other triumvirates. Whichever team first extinguishes their opponents’ pyre wins. Rites are essentially ball games played by two teams of three (triumvirates) in which an orb must be thrown into the other team’s goal (the titular Pyre) for a certain number of points. In Pyre, you as the player (called the Reader in-game) lead a team of exiled misfits through a series of games called Rites. Supergiant Games achieves near complete ludonarrative consonance through its implementation of player choice. Amir Rao and Greg Kasavin, the designers (the latter also the writer) at Supergiant Games, align the story and gameplay just as the guiding stars align for Pyre’s triumvirates. Developed by Supergiant Games and released in 2017, Pyre is a game about achieving freedom. As unique as that voice will be your experience with Pyre, because it is designed so that the act of play is integrated with the story. There are very few games that are as singular in their identity as Pyre.
